Sharing a common thread with those who love the art of hand embroidery

I have put away my embroidery needle

just for a while..................and have picked up my crochet hook................
to try something different. I love the texture of thread crochet, and I love the old fashioned charm it holds.I usually "play it safe in crochet" by choosing a simple pineapple or granny square design. However, I have been wanting to learn something new.....................
This is supposed to be a good size doily.......about 18 inches,................. when I get through with it. I have enjoyed crocheting the late night hours away on this piece. Not sure what I will exactly use it for..............probably store it away .................. to be handed down years from now. I just enjoy the process of getting a piece like this done. How about you?
Do  you have any crocheted doilies in your possession? Were they created by some talented woman in your family and then handed down to you? Or were you lucky enough to rescue it from a shelf in a store? I would love to hear!

I crocheted for many many years before I started tatting but I do still crochet now and then. I've been doing a lot of flowers lately, mostly roses of some kind. They can be used in so many ways. I'm not one to make doilies since I don't use them. I do like to make the little Irish Crochet bags and sachets and I also like filet crochet. Looks like you're doing great so far!

You are so very talented! I can crochet something very simple, but that doily looks pretty complex. My grandmother did a lot of crochet, especially doll clothes and handkerchief edges. I am lucky enough to have a few pieces she did.

Please show us the finished doily!

That is so pretty.

Now, I wish I had time to crochet. Haven't picked up a hook in ages.

Hi Kathleen,

I've been crocheting for 19 years. My favorites to use are threads and fingering weight cotton and wool. I also love to use a very large hook and crochet with ribbon and fabric strips.

I collect old doilies and have a good number of them. All of the doilies I've crocheted in the past were given away.

Your doily is coming along nicely..they are so beautiful especially the larger sizes as you are doing.

You must think I've fallen off the planet...I must email and catch up.

Hugs to you,
Stephanie ♥

I've always loved crochet, and did a lot of it years ago --- mostly doilies. Then, it seemed to go "out" as far as decorating was concerned, and I put the needle down and did some afghans. I still have the beautiful bedsprad that my grandmother crocheted for me. I'm scared to use it!!!!! I also have a box of her doilies. My other grandmother always crocheted potholders and baby booties. Wish I had some of those now. I just got so used to seeing them back then that I never thought about having a set for myself. To this day, I love the old crocheted potholders!

Lovely! We've been on Spring Break and with dust storms keeping us indoors, I've been crocheting the days away ... making lots and lots of doilies and dishcloths and a baby afghan that only now needs a border. :) I like to try new patterns if there aren't too many rows to have to change and follow. I like quick and simple! My pattern reading skills aren't the greatest to begin with. Hope you are having a great day. Tammy

Kathleen, that is simply beautiful!

I have a few vintage crocheted doilies; some were inherited and some were antique store finds. I love them all!

Hi :-)

I would love to learn to crochet, but I don't know how I'd fit it in - I already have too many projects in 16th/17thC silk and goldwork, Raised and Stumpwork and Needlepainting! I've got plans for the next 2 years at least!

But I wish I did. My best friend does.

I was lucky enough to inherit my grandmother's collection of doilies. I used one large one (linen with a crocheted surround) to do a needlepainted piece upon
http://elmsleyrose.blogspot.com/2008/08/rust-red-iris-gone-home.html if you care to see it :-)

I have many others in storage, and a few of my favourites sprinkled around my home. (I also have a lot of antiques that I inherited from her, so it all fits together)

I also have the painted wooden 'doily holder' (two round pieces of dark wood painted with flowers and attached together by a piece of ribbon) which I also have on display

I feel very lucky to have these lovely pieces :-)
