Oh, give me the country! where grass is green;
Where the roses bloom with satiny sheen;
Where the modest violet lifts up its head,
As on it the warmth of the sun is shed:
Give me the country! where all is serene;
Where the air is pure and fragrant and clean,
And noise of the city is far away;
Where gaiety thrives through each night and day.
God made the country, so lovely and fair!,
Its wide open spaces for all to share;
Where joy and contentment each one may find
If he, earnestly, seeks for peace of mind.
Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, "Give Me The Country!" (1940s)
The aprons hanging on the line are a real delight, a feast for the eyes and a beautiful poem too.
ReplyDeleteCountry life is hard but it's heaven on earth.
ReplyDelete40 years ago I lived in the country. I went outside at night to enjoy the wonderful sky and hear the crickets and frogs on a summer night. They built subdivisions near by. Then another. Then on the land behind the houses across the street. Then came Walmart 1 mile away and the small quiet connecting high way at the end of our road became a busy road. My silent night changed to diesel engines, motorcycles, booming exhaust systems and radios drowning out Nature's Song. I can barely see the stars in a light lit sky. Moving farther out in our older age and difficulty in travel is not an option. Time marches on.

Yes, indeed! Give me the country. Have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful poem! And the aprons! oh how special they are! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI feel for Carol; time does march on but the beat isn't always pleasant is it.
Ahhh, the days of laundry hanging on the line, breeze blowing. I couldn't wait to go to bed on the sheets from the line! I have a apron pattern from the 1940's and made one. I use it every year when I can my veggies. Times change, days go by. Change. Darn.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of those aprons hanging in the sunshine, so pretty!
ReplyDeleteJust lovely, Kathleen!
