Sharing a common thread with those who love the art of hand embroidery

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

In the corner of my studio,

there is an old dresser, it's drawers lined with vintage floral paper prints,
and full of hand embroidered samples of my work.

Strands of floss lie in wait for the next project that will soon be started.

In the center of the dresser, a missing drawer left a perfect space for small wooden boxes to fit. These boxes are full of metal thimbles,.............some handed down from family, some found in sewing boxes from estate sells.......each one, to me, has a story to tell.

There are also the collection of delightful ceramic thimbles, purchased from traveling friends and family, and brought home to me.

A large jar of buttons, some from the clothing of family members........and some from the children who have grown up and left the nest............sits on top of the dresser. Keeping company along with it is

an old jar, in which I think pickles might have come in, and that I rescued from a heap of broken jars, which holds a collection of small wooden spools of thread.

my designing pencils stand gathered together in an old tea canister, that belonged to a set given as a wedding gift so many years ago.

A set of miniature sewing boxes hold the many pins, needles and bobbins that I work with from day to day.

There is also a cheery lace curtained window, which gives the best light for me to work in,

and a wonderful view of the woods that surround the farmhouse.........where I can find inspiration at all hours of the day.
Now, tell me about your studio or creative space.......
Do you have shelves of supplies or do you use dressers?
Do you have a window or do you have special lighting?
What gives you inspiration?
I would love to hear!

I stop in my tracks when I hear someone say " I'm bored..." I have so many things I want to do that I need at least 100 years more!!!!! I always have a project with me " just in case" the car breaks down ..... the Dr. is late. the babies sleep and hour longer!!!!! Thank God for creativity!!!!!

My studio?? Oh I wish! My friends actually envy my space, as we have a four bedroom home, and only two of us are here. So I've taken over the two spare bedrooms at the front of the house for my linen collection and craft stuff. But like most people, what one has is never quite enough, and I wish I could knock down the wall between the two rooms and make them into one large studio! But we don't have the money for that, so I'll just continue to work in my messy small room, for which I should be very grateful, lol!

Sewing collectables are just so...I can't think of the word I'm looking for. They are small, seemingly insignificant, practical pieces of times gone by but they hold so much sweet essence of life and memories.
Thanks for sharing yours!

Your studio is lovely and organized. My supplies are spread all over the place and I can never find a thing which makes it hard to feel inspired. I need to purge and get things in order. I have a collection of ceramic thimbles too. Hope you are having a great day. Best wishes, Tammy
